My daughter has been taking weekly guitar lessons at Monrovia Music Academy for over a year and a half now. She started her lessons here when she was a shy 13-year-old. Her instructor, Ari Brattkus, made her feel comfortable from her very first lesson with him. He has been very nice and is always supportive of her. He allows her to choose songs to work on that she enjoys, while also assigning others that will help her advance her technique. The front desk staff are always friendly and very easy to work with when rescheduling sessions or answering questions. They have also been very responsive via text message. I’ve seen the other instructors interacting with their students and can tell that everyone at Monrovia Music Academy really seems to enjoy what they do. Everyone has been great! The option to choose virtual lessons has come in very handy when we have vacations, schedule conflicts or when my daughter is sick. MMA has become part of our Sunday routine and we couldn’t be happier.

Love this music school! Staff is always friendly. My child is learning drums from teacher Kenny. He has remarkable patience and always takes time to explain things in a way that is easy to understand. Kenny is always encouraging and positive. I highly recommend Kenny to any parent looking for a drum or piano teacher!

My son has been learning piano with Chris for 2 years. Keeping interest is always the most important thing for younger kids. Love loves to have class with his cool teacher! Highly recommended!

Frequently Asked Questions About Monrovia Guitar Lessons

What age can my child start guitar lessons?

We accept students from age five. Guitar has a physical challenge that piano and drums don’t really have, which is that students have to press the strings down against the fretboard. For little kids, that can be uncomfortable if the instrument isn’t set up with the right string tension and action height. Our instructors prioritize comfort and the appropriate setup from the start for your child so they can focus on learning and actually enjoy playing!

We recommend starting with whichever one the student is most interested in. The basics are the same for both acoustic or electric guitar lessons in Monrovia. If a child is really drawn to electric guitar, we start there. As they develop, they’ll naturally pick up on what each style is used for and what makes them different.

Students play something in their very first lesson! It might be a simplified version of a song, or it might involve open strings while a student’s fingers are still getting used to the pressure of the fretboard, but either way they’re playing music from the start. What tends to surprise parents is how quickly it happens once a student is actually playing rather than just working through exercises. We find this not only helps students stay motivated, but also keeps them engaged and excited about their lessons.

No. We have guitars of all sizes and types at the studio, so there’s nothing to bring to a trial or to weekly lessons. Although we don’t rent instruments out, when a student is ready to practice at home, their guitar teacher in Monrovia will help them figure out what to buy. Guitars are fairly inexpensive to get started with, and we can help point you toward the right instrument for you or your child.

We want students learning their favorite songs, because that’s what keeps the engagement going week to week. If you enjoy the music you’re learning to play, you’re going to practice differently than if you’re running through something you don’t enjoy or care about. Most of our guitar teachers work across rock, pop, blues, classical, and most contemporary styles. For something more specific, we’ll find the right match. We’re excited to get to know your musical interests and tailor your guitar lessons in Monrovia around them!
